The Aftershocks of Criticism

It happened yesterday. I thought I could push it off for at least another few months. But alas, the inevitable occurred. Deep down I knew it was bound to happen, but I was in denial and I was enjoying the honeymoon. And when it — the inevitable –happened, it hit me between the eyes. I felt the sting for about a minute. Then the pain , having reached its peak, began to subside. After several minutes of deep breathing, I was fine. Yes, I survived and yes, I am here to tell the story. Continue reading

Balance in Humility

It is said that as human beings we are supposed to carry in our pockets two messages. In one, we have a message that says, “For me the world was created.” In the other, we carry – “I am but dust of the earth.”  Which one is the one we have as our mantra? We are to take a good look at both of them throughout our days. The trick is to know our strengths –  and to balance them out with humility.

I was reminded this the other day when at a party with a group of friends I was talking to an acquaintance about my book, “Mazel Tov! It’s a Bubby!” The acquaintance wanted to know where she could purchase the book. I answered her question with a list of places that I knew had the book. After we switched topics, my husband turned to me and quietly whispered in my ear, “Cut the high pressure salesmanship with these people. It’s not right. They can’t afford the book.” Continue reading

First Day of School for Grandma

There used to be those jokes: You know you’re a redneck when….
My feeling today was: I know I’m getting older when….

I had no clue about the start of the school year. Yup. This week was the start of the schools in our neighborhood, and I didn’t even know anything about it until today. For the first time in almost 30 years, I didn’t think about school supplies, admission cards, backpacks, or teachers. For the first time in a long time, I found out in casual conversation that – oh yeah, today was the first day of school.

My daughter-in-law mentioned to me that her son is starting school today. Then, I perked my ears and eyes up and did notice kids walking home from school in uniforms at the end of the day. I guess I needed to pay attention!

So how am I celebrating this newness of the school year this year? I do have to commemorate it – if only for old times sake. I know. I will buy my grandsons who are starting yeshiva a special picture book that was just released this week!

The book, “Moshe Goes To Yeshiva” is about a little boy who starts school (you figured that out, didn’t you?), and his mom is all anxious about how he will fare. The boy is fine and prepared, and all pumped up. But then when the mother pulls away from her child, he clamps up and becomes afraid.

A great book to  read to kids before school starts (or once school starts too…), and prepare the child for the beginning of school. All beginnings are hard, and this book can ease the transition.

Well, that’s my Grandmother perspective and take on  beginnings, newness, and first day of school.

So, I know I’m getting older when the main focus of the first day of school is going out to buy a book for my grandson!

Happy reading for me and for other grandmothers! Much luck in the coming school year for all the children!!

Mazel Tov! It’s a Bubby! (and a book!)

By now, most people who know me, are aware that I am releasing a book (Mazel Tov! It’s a Bubby! – with Israel Bookshop Publications; Sept 5, 2012), please G-d. The past few years of conceiving the idea, writing, editing, submitting, negotiating and polishing my book has been quite an exhilarating journey. And the fact that from the time I was notified that my book will be published until the actual release is a total of nine months, is only one of the reasons that this experience is similar to having a baby.

At this time, to use the pregnancy analogy — I am in my third trimester, ninth month and I am feeling the gamut of emotions. Excited (it is thank G-d a huge accomplishment), nervous (what if there are mistakes….), impatient anticipation (feeling like this pregnancy is dragging), gratitude (to G-d for bringing me to this stage), and many other feelings.

I look forward to keeping you all posted on the developments of my book release. I hope to have please G-d, a book signing event. The location, date, and time will be announced shortly on this blog.

Stay tuned for more.
